ACPL Celebrates 50,000 Free Books Milestone with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

The program has delivered tens of thousands of books to young readers across Allen County, boosting early literacy despite recent state funding challenges.

A major milestone for early literacy has been reached right here in Fort Wayne.

The Allen County Public Library recently announced it has officially surpassed the 50,000-book mark in its partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

This means tens of thousands of stories have landed directly in the mailboxes of local children, completely free of charge to their families.

It's a number that represents far more than just paper and ink.

ACPL Director Susan P. Baier described the achievement as an investment in the entire community's future success.

She emphasized that giving a child a book is a direct line to improving their academic and economic prospects down the road.

The program, launched locally by the ACPL Foundation in October of 2024, is already having a tremendous impact.

As of this summer, an incredible 7,739 children have been served, with 52,909 books mailed out in total.

That figure represents nearly one-third of all eligible children under five in Allen County.

The goal is simple but powerful: to boost kindergarten readiness and inspire a lifelong love of reading from the earliest age.

However, the program faces a significant hurdle.

A crucial funding match from the State of Indiana was recently removed from the state budget.

This controversial move puts pressure on local fundraising efforts to sustain the program's growth.

In response, a statewide private philanthropy campaign is now being led by First Lady Maureen Braun to secure future funding.

For now, enrollment remains open and free for any family with a child under five residing in Allen County.

Once registered, children receive a new, age-appropriate book every month until they turn five.
