Fort Wayne Activates Winter Contingency Plan as Cold Weather Looms |
Local shelters and community partners announce expanded services to protect vulnerable residents from dropping temperatures. |
As the winter chill begins to settle over our city, local leaders have officially detailed the Fort Wayne Winter Contingency Plan for the 2025-2026 season.
This coordinated effort provides a critical safety net for residents facing the harsh realities of Indiana weather without adequate shelter.
The planâs core is its expanded overnight shelter services, which will be operational from December 1, 2025, through the end of March 2026.
Three key locations will provide overnight assistance for those in need.
These vital shelters include The Rescue Mission at 404 E. Washington Blvd., the St. Joseph Missions Womenâs Shelter at 3505 Lake Ave., and Just Neighbors, located at 2925 E. State Blvd.
Beyond overnight stays, a network of daytime warming centers will offer a refuge from the biting cold.
These locations often open even earlier than December, depending on weather conditions.
Residents can find warmth and services at several partner sites across Fort Wayne.
The Rescue Mission will also serve as a warming center seven days a week, providing meals in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.
Other daytime havens include InAsMuch Ministry on Broadway and Project.ME, which offers weekend hours.
The downtown Allen County Public Library Main Branch continues its role as a key public warming space with extensive hours throughout the week.
Even Citilink buses will function as mobile warming centers for riders with a valid pass, offering a unique and accessible option for getting out of the cold.
Officials expect more centers to be added as the season progresses, ensuring broad coverage for the entire community.
