Fort Wayne’s Unsung Hero Drives Hope Across Borders with Compassion and Ambulances |
In the heart of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where community ties run deep, Bryan Peterson has spent over 30 years saving lives without seeking the spotlight. At 55, this dedicated father, husband, and first responder embodies the kind of everyday heroism that inspires us all, especially those balancing careers, families, and a desire to make the world better. Honored as an Unsung Hero at the 2025 Celebrate Downtown event, Bryan’s story is one of compassion, resilience, and global impact, reminding us that true strength lies in lifting others, whether they’re next door or across borders.
It began in the late 1980s during a trip to Tijuana, Mexico, when a teenage Bryan, an aspiring EMT from Fort Wayne, witnessed a massive explosion. Amid the chaos, he aided local responders, seeing their struggle with outdated equipment and unreliable vehicles. That moment shaped his life’s mission. He returned home, joined the Fort Wayne Fire Department, and took on roles at Parkview EMS, Huntertown Fire, Muncie Fire, AMR Indianapolis, and the Memorial Coliseum for nearly 25 years.
Bryan’s commitment grew beyond local calls. On volunteer trips to Tijuana, he built lifelong bonds with medics. In 2019, when an ambulance broke down mid-response, Bryan and fellow firefighter Jerry Shultz founded One World Medics. Their nonprofit refurbishes retired U.S. ambulances, stocking them with cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and oxygen supplies for underserved communities in Mexico, Honduras, and beyond. By 2023, they’d delivered 30 vehicles, with Bryan often driving them to the border and training local medics on advanced tools like intubation devices. Each ambulance carries a sticker honoring Capt. Eric Balliet, a fallen Fort Wayne firefighter, ensuring his legacy saves lives.
In 2024, Bryan became Chief of EMS for the Northwest Fire District, yet his global efforts never wavered. He credits Fort Wayne’s community; hospitals, colleges like Ivy Tech, the Hispanic community, and El Mexicano newspaper for their support. “This isn’t something we’re doing; it’s something northeast Indiana is doing,” he says humbly. For women navigating midlife; juggling family, work, or caregiving, Bryan’s journey resonates deeply, showing how small acts can spark profound change. For men, it’s a call to quiet leadership and partnership.
Whether answering 911 calls in Fort Wayne or equipping medics in remote villages, Bryan Peterson proves heroism is about action, not applause. In a divided world, he’s building bridges, one ambulance at a time.
