đŸ„› Summit Staples Snapshot:  Week 5: Dairy & Basics (October 2025)

Eggs and milk ease a bit since September, Walmart still cheapest basket, and Aldi joins the mix with premium options. See how local trends compare statewide and nationally.

Part of the Summit Secret Scoops Series:  Tracking Fort Wayne’s Real Grocery Prices

We’re kicking off Month 2 of the Summit Staples Snapshot, checking back in on the Dairy & Basics that start nearly every shopping list;  milk, eggs, butter, cheese, and yogurt.

đŸ’” Total Basket Comparison

Store Current Total (Oct) Last Month (Sep) Change
Kroger $11.56 $11.65 ✅ – $0.09
Meijer $12.13 $12.25 ✅ – $0.12
Walmart $11.04 $11.45 ✅ – $0.41
Aldi $13.91 — (new addition) —

🧼 Overall, prices dipped slightly across most stores.  Particularly at Walmart, which trimmed nearly half a dollar from its dairy basket since September. Aldi joins the series this month, and while some of its premium options (like cage-free eggs) push totals higher, it remains strong on butter and basics.

🧠 What We’re Seeing in Fort Wayne

  • Eggs down slightly at all three major chains after last month’s jump.

  • Butter & cheese hold steady, signaling stable dairy supply.

  • Yogurt crept up pennies at Kroger, but stayed flat elsewhere.

  • Walmart maintains the lowest five-item basket by roughly a $1 margin.

đŸŒœ How We Compare to Indiana and Beyond

Statewide, grocery prices are following a similar trend, small decreases in dairy offset by steady costs for packaged items.

  • Indiana’s food-at-home inflation is hovering near 3 %, just above national averages.

  • Nationally, milk prices are easing, but butter and cheese remain sticky due to packaging and transport costs.

  • Fort Wayne’s local basket shows a slower, steadier decline, meaning households here are seeing modest relief but not dramatic drops.

🔼 What’s Next

Week 6 shifts focus to proteins and pantry staples again, the most volatile category in the index.

Next month, we’ll be able to compare full 20-item baskets month-to-month, revealing whether Fort Wayne’s grocery costs are trending downward or leveling out.
