đŸš—đŸ‘©‍đŸ‘©‍👧‍👩 Car Line Chat: Real Talk from the School Pickup Line

This Week: Pumpkin Spice, Principals & Policy Deadlines

Scene: The leaves are finally turning gold. Sarah’s sipping a pumpkin-spice latte, Maria’s wrapped in a scarf that looks straight off Pinterest, and the line of minivans crawls forward like clockwork.

Sarah: Tell me why October makes me feel like I’ve got my life together
for about five minutes. Between fall break plans, soccer tournaments, and Halloween landing on a Friday this year, it’s pure chaos.

Maria: Don’t even. My daughter already asked if her “ghoul makeup” can go in her backpack. I’m like, sweetheart, unless the principal wants a heart attack, that’s a no. Speaking of principals, did you see Dr. Jenner’s note? It’s National Principals Month.

Sarah: I did! Over 2,200 schools and that many principals in Indiana. She thanked them all for basically being the glue that holds our kids’ world together. Honestly, I wouldn’t last a week in their shoes.

(They inch forward. A dad in a pickup is blasting “Eye of the Tiger.”)

Maria: Okay, but did you catch the new Blue Ribbon Schools part? Governor Braun and Dr. Jenner are honoring the state’s top schools this month. I kind of love seeing public recognition for educators doing amazing work...it’s about time.

Sarah: Same. Oh! And there’s a new push for data science education. The IDOE and Data Science for Everyone are recruiting teachers to make math and data more hands-on. I just hope my son learns how to balance a checkbook before coding AI robots.

Maria: Ha! And the computer science feedback form, teachers can share input on how Indiana updates its CS education plan. Between that and the AI in Schools series, it’s like the future’s already here. Meanwhile, I’m just trying to figure out how to update my phone.

(A teacher in a scarecrow costume waves cars along. Kids giggle through the windows.)

Sarah: Speaking of fall vibes, did you see it’s Farm to School Month? They’re doing corn-themed food days and the Indiana Apple Crunch; everyone eats apples at the same time to celebrate local farms. Register here if your school wants to join. I love that!

Maria: I do too. That’s the kind of fun that sneaks in nutrition without feeling like a lesson.

(Cue the Car Line Teacher, coffee in hand, leaning through the window.)

Teacher: Ladies, quick FYI before the kids come out...don’t forget October certification closes today! Graduation audits end October 24, and if anyone wants to thank their principal, this is the week. Oh, and schools are getting free access to Nimble for recruiting teachers, huge win for smaller districts!

Sarah: You’re amazing. Also
love the scarecrow look, by the way.

Teacher: Gotta keep it festive! And secure...Cybersecurity Month, you know. Lock your passwords, not just your pumpkins.

(The teacher waves them forward. Jackie honks behind them, clearly over the small talk.)

Maria: There’s Jackie again. I swear she’s got a sixth sense for when we’re mid-conversation.

Sarah: Let her honk. Some of us are trying to be informed citizens, thank you very much!

(They both laugh as the line starts to move. Kids appear, backpacks swinging, fall breeze rolling in.)
